Making waste into something useful is only one of the things that you can do with Fischer-Tropsch technology. What is the process and how can it benefit you?
The Fischer-Tropsch Process
The Fischer-Tropsch process is a series of chain growth reactions that involve converting carbon monoxide and hydrogen (syngas) into straight chain hydrocarbons and/or paraffin wax . Using hydrocracker technology and fractional distillation the waxes can then be converted into liquid hydrocarbons like diesel. In order for this to work the fuel, or feedstock, must be first converted into syngas.
Sources of Feedstock for Syngas
While the Fischer-Tropsch process handles the heavy lifting of making paraffin wax, there has to be a feedstock that can feed the front end process. This may be a gasifier for solid feedstocks or a an Autothermal Reformer and Pre-reformer for gaseous feedstocks like natural gas. There are many feedstocks that can be used.
Stranded Natural Gas: In many areas where fracking is common flaring of the co-produced natural gas has been either entirely banned or severely limited.. Companies looking for alternative solutions would benefit by utilizing flare gas as a way to generate syngas and ultimately produce synthetic petroleum or diesel.
Coal: Coal is another excellent source of syngas. If you are using coal, you can produce syngas from coal in a water slurry form. Due to the low hydrogen to carbon monoxide ratio that coal will produce, you may need to augment your coal based Fischer-Tropsch plant with a water-gas shift reaction.
Biomass: There are several sources of biomass that can be used. Much like with coal, biomass- gasification can be coupled with the Fischer-Tropsch process. Municipal solid waste is one such feedstock. Another is wood chips.
Biogas: Biogas from large anaerobic digesters is another potential feedstock.
